These eight inch thick digging mats are commonly used for several applications in the oil field including excavator support, access through wet areas, and air bridges. Use Of Cross Laminated “CLT” and Composite Crane Mats

Over the past few years you have probably heard more and more about Cross Laminated “CLT” and Composite Crane Mats . These types of mats are a great alternative to traditional timber mats most commonly used in pipeline and heavy construction. However, just as with hardwood mats, there are always pros and cons to each type. Here is a little information on these alternative options:

Cross Laminated “CLT” Mats are manufactured from multiple layers of lumber, each layer laying perpendicular to the last, and glued in place. CLT mats are made from non-hardwood species such as pine so they are lighter, but have been tested to be stronger than some hardwood mats. The way they are glued and layered together also creates a more rigid mat. These mats come in a variety of sizes including the sizes of traditional digging mats and 3ply access mats. One interesting fact about CLT mats is that unlike timber mats, CLT mats are engineered to all have known capacity characteristics.

Composite Mats are manufactured from plastic and are molded into various sizes. Generally, composite mats are only a few inches thick and are used in place of hardwood or CLT access mats. They are best used to protect the ground when moving heavy equipment or to help create traction and stability in wet locations. An interesting fact about composite mats is that some can be melted down and reformed into new mats when they begin to get worn down.

How Much Do Crane Mats Weigh

We get this question a lot … how much do crane mats weigh?

The answer is that the weight of crane mats can vary substantially based on the size and type of mat. For instance, an 8″ thick hardwood mat usually weighs around 155 lbs per foot. So a 16′ mat would weigh 2,500 lbs and an 18′ mat would weigh 2,800 lbs. When you look at crane mats that are normally 12″ thick the weight per foot goes up to around 240 lbs per foot. So a 20′ mat would weigh 4,800 lbs and a 30′ mat would weigh 7,200 lbs.

Now these are only estimates and we always say that every mat is different and can vary in weight. A second consideration is the age and moister content of each mat. If they are brand new mats the lumber is probably high in moister and they could weigh more than mats that have been sitting for a year.

One of the first questions I get when a new customer calls is “where are you located?” Our main office is located in Kerrville Texas which is 60 miles north of San Antonio, however, we also have sawmills and distribution points throughout the United States to supply your job wherever it might be.

Use of Hardwood Crane Mats on Pipeline Crossings

As more and more pipelines are being built it is almost impossible to construct a new pipeline or new drill site without having to drive your heavy equipment across and existing underground pipeline. Different Pipeline companies have various requirements for protecting their existing assets and won’t allow construction companies to cross their lines unless they comply with these requirements. Two of the methods outlined below require different types of hardwood crane mats, both of which Pipeline Skid Service can supply.

Air Bridge – when the pipeline company is requiring an air bridge over their existing line you are going to need either eight inch or twelve inch thick hardwood crane mats for the job. Normally one crane mat is laid down parallel to the underground pipeline on each side of the pipe and then four or five crane mats are laid perpendicular resting each end on top of the parallel mat. This creates a temporary bridge spanning the existing pipeline.

Weight Displacement – sometimes the pipeline company only requires that matting be laid down directly on the ground above the pipeline to distribute the weight across a larger area. In this case, either crane mats or 3ply laminated mats can be used.

Here are some jobs we have been working on:

We sent several hundred laminated crane mats to the San Antonio area for a heavy construction job. The mats are being used to support the crane while installing steel rafters in a fifty thousand square foot warehouse. These mats will be available for resale in the next couple of months.

We shipped 28 foot bridge crane mats into Arkansas for a bridge construction job. The mats will be used as temporary support while constructing a bridge for vehicle traffic.

We provided custom sized hardwood oak cribbing for a hydro electric power plant construction job in Washington state. Sizes shipped mainly included 12 by 12 timbers in 12, 10, and 8 foot lengths. We can saw hardwood timbers to meet nearly any specification you need.

1,300 Laminated Mats Supplied on Midwest Project

Pipeline Skid Service supplied over 1,300 laminated mats for a pipeline job in Missouri. The mats were used to build a road down the right away in order to preserve farm land already in place. The project lasted approximately 2 months and we now have used mats available for other customers.

Currently we have around 250 of these used 16 foot laminated mats available for resale. These laminated mats (also called swamp mats, truck mats, access mats, and mud mats) are in great condition and are ready to move now.

We also have a great stock of new products including skids , crane mats , dragline mats and laminated mats .
